Google has announced that it would soon start using geothermal energy to power its Nevada data center. The announcement will see Google become the first hyper-scale cloud operator to use the earth’s heat to power its servers. Fervo Energy, a clean energy startup, will be helping Google develop the geothermal power project.

The new development will help ensure that Google’s Nevada data centers get supplied with carbon-free energy. It will also ensure that green energy is provided 24/7. Michael Terrell, Director of Energy at Google, noted that the project could serve as a proof-of-concept to show how clean energy sources like geothermal can help replace carbon-emitting power sources across the globe.
