Google has announced that it has signed a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), EDPR NA Distributed Generation (EDPR NA DG), for solar energy in the US. This deal is reportedly the largest-ever corporate sponsorship for distributed generation signed between two companies in the US.

Over 80 distributed solar PV projects will be installed through the PPA, with a capacity of approximately 650MWp (500 Mwac). The initial solar projects will be located in Ohio, while the other locations have yet to be announced.

The giant has shared that the portfolio of energy projects will be partially funded by Google's acquisition of 'Impact Renewable Energy Certificates' (ImpactRECs), which EDP outlined certify that a buyer has the rights to the environmental and social benefits of the renewable electricity produced by a particular project.

Speaking about this, Sana Ouji, energy lead, Google through the partnership the company aims to reduce "energy burden" in the communities where it operates, while progressing toward its 24/7 carbon-free energy goal.

According to Google it has been collaborating with EDPR for approximately two years now. Their joint efforts have been focused on developing a clean energy initiative that aims to promote energy equity and reduce energy burden. This is being achieved through an open book transaction model called the ImpactRec.

Ouji added: "We are grateful to EDPR for their partnership, collaboration, and steady focus on our shared mission, and excited to have the opportunity to contribute to our data center communities by extending the benefits of our clean energy investments."

Meanwhile Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade, EDP's CEO, said: "We are pleased to sign this framework agreement that will allow us to develop a substantial number of renewable energy projects, while taking care of underserved communities. The much-needed transition to cleaner ways of producing and using energy must leave no one behind, and this partnership with Google allows us to do just that, by making electricity cleaner and more affordable to more families."
