Google: Google plans to use greener energy by moving workloads between data centers

Google will be moving workloads to data centers where renewable energy is available to boost renewable energy usage. Ross Koningstein, Co-founder of Google’s Carbon Intelligence Computing program, said that shifting compute tasks across locations is the Company’s first step in carbon-aware computing. He also commented that by making its data centers shift flexible tasks to different times of the day, the Company was able to use more electricity when there’s a massive availability of solar and wind energy.

However, this new development will only be covering ‘moveable’ tasks. Workloads protected by sovereignty laws or latency-sensitive workloads will be based out of their original data center.
