Facebook has acquired 212 hectares of land in Andrup in Esbjerg, Denmark, for DKK 277 million ($43 million). The Esbjerg municipal announced that Facebook could start planning and surveying the land for building a data center in the future. Mayor Jesper Frost Rasmussen of Esbjerg municipal was delighted about the development. He said he is happy that Facebook is back in the municipal with the possibility of developing a data center in Andrup.

Rasmussen noted that signing the purchase agreement is only the first step in the process as developing a data center in the area will be in tune with the municipal’s ambition of becoming a data hub. He further added that the new data center would also help attract more businesses to the area. Facebook was in the process of investigating the land for potential data center development in 2018-19 but decided against land acquisition.

A spokesperson for Facebook, Lukasz Lindell, said the company had resumed studies of the area for a possible data center site. He further added that there would be preparatory work carried out on the acquired land in the next few months that will help support the area's development.
