Equinix has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu, India. The MoU will help foster Equinix's planned project in Siruseri, Chennai. The data center company bought 4.5 acres of land for $9 million in the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd (SIPCOT) IT Park earlier in March. It also plans to develop a 24MW facility on the land. According to reports, Equinix intends to spend over Rs 1,000 crores ($126.4 million) in developing the facility over the next 10 years.

Equinix India's managing director, Manoj Paul, said: "India is a strategic market for Equinix. Our investment in Chennai to drive digital infrastructure growth in India is part of our commitment to the market. With multiple favorable factors, Chennai has emerged as a hub for data centers and we are excited for an MoU with the Government of Tamil Nadu."

He added, "Thanks to the Industries Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, SIPCOT and Guidance Tamil Nadu for their support of Equinix's growth into Chennai. We believe that with the necessary infrastructural support, regulatory facilitation, and uninterrupted power supply, we can build a successful data center in Chennai, particularly from an employment generation standpoint while delivering the best in class digital infrastructure to customers."

Equinix first ventured into the Indian data center market in 2020 after acquiring GPX Global Systems for $161 million. The company took over two data centers with the deal.
