EcoDataCenter Secures 10MW Hydropower PPA with Fortum in Sweden

Nordic data center developer EcoDataCenter has signed a 10MW hydroelectric power purchase agreement with Finnish energy company Fortum to supply its Falun, Sweden facility. Under the four-year deal running from 2026 to 2030, EcoDataCenter will source electricity from Fortum’s Dalälven hydro plant and acquire the associated guarantees of origin, while Fortum will handle physical power delivery and balancing responsibilities. The Falun data center, which began operations in 2019, also hosts capacity for neocloud provider CoreWeave.

"Our roots in Dalarna and the close collaboration with local power producers are a key to growth – for us and for the industry as a whole. The agreement with Fortum, which provides our facility in Falun with power directly from the Dalälven River, is a good example of this. When data centers and energy companies plan together, natural solutions arise that create new opportunities for the entire region," said Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDataCenter.

"Data centers are an important and growing industry that we at Fortum see great potential in. This is a significant first step for us in Sweden in a conscious investment in this segment. The fact that we can start this journey in Dalarna, where we have such a strong local presence with our hydropower, makes it extra rewarding," added Simon-Erik Ollus, head of large accounts and electricity market at Fortum.

Fortum operates 39 hydro plants on Sweden’s Dalälven River with 970MW of combined capacity, though the specific facility supplying EcoDataCenter has not been disclosed. The company is also expanding into data center development across several Finnish locations. EcoDataCenter was founded in 2015 and later became majority-owned by Areim, which merged it with Fortlax in 2019. In 2025, it sold three Swedish facilities to CapMan Infra as it pivoted toward hyperscale development.Brookfield_Renewable_US.7f9c664b.fill-280x185.jpg
