Data center operator Chindata and Chinese technology conglomerate HEC Group have broken ground on a 7.5MW data center in Hubei Province, China.Chindata announced on Friday, April 3, that construction on the site has begun. The 6.3-hectare campus will include both the data center and an “AI showcase and academic exchange center.”
The facility will be built near Qinglin Temple in Gaobazhou Town, Yidu, a city in southern Hubei Province, central China. Few details have been disclosed regarding the project’s expected completion timeline. Chindata was previously owned by private equity firm Bain Capital, founded by Mitt Romney. However, Bain agreed to sell its stake in the company to HEC in September 2025, with the transaction completed in January.
Hubei is also home to the Dongyuemiao data center project, developed by Chinese energy firm Three Gorges Group. As its name suggests, the facility is located on the right bank of the Three Gorges Dam the world’s largest power station by installed capacity. Chinese operator Centrin Data also runs data center facilities in Wuhan, the province’s capital.
