Aon Expands Data Center Insurance Capacity to $3.5bn

Apr 21, 2026 | Posted by Abdul-Rahman Oladimeji

Insurance firm Aon has expanded the level of coverage it can provide for data center projects. The company first launched its Data Center Lifecycle Insurance Program (DCLP) last year. The multi-line facility spans construction, cargo, cyber, and operational risk under a single program, and is designed to help clients manage exposures across the full lifecycle of data center development and operations.

The DCLP initially provided up to $1.5 billion in coverage for construction risks, delay in start-up, and operational property damage or business interruption. Aon is now increasing total program capacity to $3.5 billion and expanding coverage to include existing data centers transitioning out of their first year of operations. The insurer said the expansion reflects “accelerating global investment” in the data center sector and the “growing importance of resilience” as facilities become larger, more capital-intensive, and increasingly critical to the global economy.

“Data centers have become foundational to innovation, connectivity, and economic growth,” said Joe Peiser, CEO of risk capital at Aon. “As these assets grow in size, complexity, and importance, resilience must be built from the start. By expanding our Data Center Lifecycle Insurance Program and extending coverage to operating data centers, Aon is helping clients anticipate risk, protect critical assets, and invest in digital infrastructure with greater confidence.”

The DCLP also includes up to $400 million in coverage for cyber attacks during construction as well as technology errors and omissions. In addition, it provides up to $500 million for cargo and transport insurance, and up to $200 million for third-party liability (excluding US exposure). Aon is among several insurers that have introduced data center-specific products over the past 18 months. Last year, Marsh launched a new insurance offering covering risks associated with data center construction, while Lockton introduced a data center SLA insurance product.

There are 4822 data centers in United States.
