AI firm Anthropic may invest in Australian AI infrastructure under a broader agreement with the government. The company, developer of the Claude AI model, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on AI safety research and support Australia’s National AI Plan.
Anthropic may invest in “data center infrastructure and energy across Australia” in line with the government’s recently outlined expectations for AI and data center projects. These guidelines emphasize prioritizing national interest, supporting the energy transition, using water sustainably and efficiently, investing in local skills and workforce, and fostering research, innovation, and domestic capability.
The memorandum does not explicitly mention data center investments, instead stating that Anthropic will “align its Australian operations” with the government’s expectations. It also outlines plans for the company to collaborate with Australian research institutions on medical research and computer science education, work with Australia’s AI Safety Institute, share its Anthropic Economic Index tracking AI’s economic impact, and develop AI training programs for the workforce.
A memorandum of understanding is typically a preliminary agreement, and this memorandum is no different, stating that it is “intended as a statement of intent and is not intended to have legal effect.”
