American Tower has submitted proposals for a new San Antonio, Texas, Edge data center. The tower company applied to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation last month to establish the 'American Tower Data Center - Highway 90'.
The company intends to invest $15 million in constructing a 7,255-square-foot "electronic data storage center" on a vacant site adjacent to an established cellular communications center at 5436 New Highway 90 West. Construction is scheduled to start in August 2024 and conclude in December 2024. The company noted that the daily operations of the new storage facility would be distinct from those of the cellular communications facility but related.
In addition to being the predominant owner of data center provider CoreSite, American Tower has plans for a significant Edge rollout. American Tower maintains several small Edge colocation facilities at tower locations in Jacksonville, Florida; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Austin, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; Denver, Colorado; and Boulder, Colorado.
American Tower claimed to have found more than 1,000 sites that could house 1MW Edge data center locations last year. Qualcomm announced a strategic partnership with the tower company earlier this year and that it would deploy a 2U Arm-based server at the American Tower Edge data center in Denver. CoreSite, the data center division of American Tower, does not presently operate any data centers in Texas. Neither business has made a public statement about the project.
