AMD will spend $135 million on chip R&D in Ireland

Over the next four years, AMD intends to invest $135 million in Ireland. The money will go toward studying and creating data centers, networking, 6G, and generative AI technologies. In addition, the company is anticipated to employ approximately 290 engineers and researchers in the country to achieve this objective.

In 2022, AMD acquired FPGA manufacturer Xilinx for $49 billion (estimated initially at $35 billion), which included Xilinx's Irish manufacturing and engineering facility. Since then, the company has stated that the Ireland R&D site has grown into one of its largest in Europe and has been responsible for producing several processors, including the AMD Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC.

In its first fiscal quarter, AMD's revenue decreased by nine percent year-over-year. AMD's PC processor sales plummeted from $2.1 billion in Q1 2022 to just $739 million in Q1 2023, primarily due to the PC market's decline. Despite this, the data center division of the company has performed well, increasing from $1.293 billion to $1.295 billion year over year.
