Alibaba Cloud Opens Fifth Data Center in Japan

Jun 20, 2026 | Posted by Abdul-Rahman Oladimeji

Alibaba Cloud has launched its fifth data center in Japan, further expanding its infrastructure footprint in the country. The new facility comes just months after the company added a fourth availability zone to its Japan region in March 2026. Alibaba Cloud first established its Tokyo region in 2016 and continues to invest in local capacity to support growing demand for cloud and AI services.

The new facility is located in Tokyo and is aimed at meeting growing demand from customers in sectors including retail, gaming, entertainment, and manufacturing. “We are seeing strong demand for cloud and AI services across Japan,” said Takeshi Kurita. “The launch of our fifth data center in Tokyo, together with local access to Model Studio and our latest AI models, marks an important milestone in our commitment to supporting Japan’s digital transformation.”

"We are seeing unprecedented demand from Japanese enterprises who are eager to leverage agentic AI to drive innovation and efficiency. By providing robust, secure, and scalable infrastructure alongside cutting-edge AI solutions, we are hoping to support Japanese developers and businesses to not just adopt AI, but to lead in the agentic AI era."

The launch marks Alibaba Cloud’s second infrastructure expansion this week. Earlier, the company announced a new cloud region in France supported by two data centers in Paris, while this month it also opened a new two-availability-zone region in Johor, Malaysia—its second cloud region in the country. The moves form part of Alibaba Cloud’s broader global expansion strategy, which has seen the company accelerate investments in data center and cloud infrastructure over the past year.Japanese_Flag.width-358.webp
