GlobeNet subsidiary V.tal, a Brazilian fiber company, has opened a brand-new Edge data center in Fortaleza. The facility, dubbed the 'Big Lobster,' will launch with a 4MW capacity over four data halls that can house a total of 400 racks. The innovative data center is connected to the company's nearby cable landing station (CLS) in Fortaleza. The 2 facilities offer a total of 75,350 square feet, 600 racks, and more than 5MW. The Fortaleza site was initially slated to launch in the third quarter of 2022, as stated in September 2021. According to reports, the company has committed $59 million in the project.
Per the vice president of V.Tal wholesale, Bento Louro, BNAmericas says that the site is already 50% leased, with an additional 25% in discussion. Totaling 10MW, V.tal presently operates four Edge data centers; two in Fortaleza, 1 in Rio de Janeiro, and a fourth in Barranquilla, Colombia. BTG bought a 57.9% ownership stake owned by Oi SA in the business's fiber-optic infrastructural assets unit, currently known as V.tal, and intended to integrate the company with GlobeNet last year. In November, V.tal completed a $470 million capital expansion underwritten by BTG and funded by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB).
GlobeNet, a wholesale telecommunications company owned by BTG Pactual Infrastructure Fund II, owns a number of underwater cables in Latin America in addition to Cable Landing Stations in Brazil, Colombia, and the United States in New Jersey and Florida. The company is also proposing a new center in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, albeit only that it will be a refit of an existing building has been disclosed. A second location in Barranquilla is also under construction.
