Discussions are being had around the possibility of a new data center in the industrial district of Westpoort near Groningen, and whether or not it gets the go-ahead will be determined by Groningen City Council.

According to a PDF document, the proposed data center would occupy 20 hectares, and, if it goes ahead, would also power 5,000 to 10,000 homes with heat.

The name of the company targeting the area is yet to be released. There is already a NorthC data center in Westpoort, which is set to expand. However, according to reports, this is a separate project from the one proposed.

According to councilor, PvdA’s Roeland van der Schaaf, discussions will be initiated with local residents to explore the possibility of a facility moving in.
