NTT has announced that following the opening of data centers in Chicago, Ill., Hillsboro, Ore., and Santa Clara, Calif.; it is building its seventh data center campus in Mesa. Estimated to open in early 2022, the 102-acre campus will contain seven data centers, with a total of 240 megawatts (MW) of critical IT load and 1.5 million sqft of space.

Commenting on the company’s expansion in Mesa being a part of a wider context, Doug Adams, CEO for the Global Data Centers Americas division of NTT Ltd., said: “The number of clients and major providers currently in the region, or set to be there soon, speaks to the fact that this has become a real data center destination. We want to have a presence in the markets that make the most sense for our clients – Phoenix stood out as one of those markets, and the city of Mesa, in particular, was the perfect fit.”

Of course, with a wave of data centers companies focussing on Mesa, a water-stressed region, for expansion, there have been a number of concerns raised by locals. However, according to NTT, the campus is being constructed with an emphasis on conserving energy and reducing water usage. Moreover it will be built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified specifications. The campus will also offer renewable energy options for prospective clients.

Welcoming NTT to the region, Sandra Watson, President & CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority, said: “We’re grateful they chose Mesa and look forward to their future success as a part of Arizona’s thriving data center ecosystem.”
