Go to PodcastThe Penguin Data Center sits in the Orlando Kue sector of the Hernandarias Industrial Park in Alto Paraná, Paraguay, about 10 kilometres from the 14 GW Itaipú hydroelectric plant. Penguin Infrastructure built and owns the on-site substation that feeds the campus, with four power transformers and two feeder lines into the data center. Penguin also owns the land immediately north of the substation plus further adjoining lots, all servable from the same substation, so the campus has room beyond its current fence line.
Penguin Infrastructure S.A. holds Paraguay's first 100 MW, 10-year power purchase agreement with the national grid operator (ANDE) and has operated the campus for about three and a half years. It began as a Bitcoin-mining and HPC site and is converting to AI and high-performance computing. Early deployments on the campus include a 27 MW hydro-powered Bitcoin-mining operation run by Marathon Digital (MARA) as a joint venture with Penguin, with additional investment from Northern Data Group.
The campus runs both colocation and bare-metal / GPU-as-a-service. One operating high-performance-computing hall is liquid cooled with chillers at high rack density. A separate hall runs full immersion cooling, with whole servers submerged in oil and chillers mounted above. Deployments above roughly 1 MW are built as traditional Tier III data halls on NVIDIA reference designs, while containerised units cover smaller footprints. Perimeter security is a double fence with a manned post.
Measured round-trip latency runs about 140 ms to Lisbon and the wider European market, and the campus has been latency-tested to Chicago.
