Prince William County, Virginia, may see more data centers being built in the region after County supervisors approved moves that could expand the Data Center Opportunity Zone Overlay District. This “overlay district” is the area where building data facilities is permitted.
Established back in 2016, the area spans 10,000 acres around the Manassas Regional Airport and in areas along Route 234, Interstate 66, Route 234, and Woodbridge.
According to InsideNova, the Board of Supervisors voted to bring in an outside consultant to analyse the potential expansion and publish a report on its findings. It is expected that the report will take up to six months to complete.
Commenting on the study, Board Chair Ann Wheeler said: “This is a study. Don’t interpret this as this is all approved. The idea of doing this is to look at the ramifications.”
