The US army has announced that it will further its data center reduction to six over the next seven years. Army CIO Raj Lyer made the announcement on Thursday and said the move is an effort to transfer more data to cloud-based systems to enhance security. This includes moving complex enterprise resource planning systems (ERPs) to the cloud.

In a C4ISRnet webinar, Lyer said: “We are looking at a 50% reduction in our data centers between now and 2028.”

According to Lyer, three of the four “most complicated ERP systems” have already been migrated to the cloud, instilling confidence that the data migration can be done on a wider scale.

Speaking about the plans, Lyer commented: “We have work to do, and we need to keep us on track.” Adding: “It is a great time to start shutting down those data centers.”
