ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), a data centre provider based in APAC, has invested in Firmus Technologies and plans to collaborate to introduce a GPU-focused Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) named Sustainable Metal Cloud (SMC). Set to debut in Singapore, this service is tailored for deep learning AI and visual computing tasks.

The core of SMC consists of immersion tanks supplied by Firmus. These tanks are housed in 1MW shipping containers, termed "Hypercubes", located within STT GDC facilities across Singapore, India, and Australia. The Singapore availability zone, labeled SIN01, is slated for launch before 2023 concludes.

Each of the Cube300 containers boasts a capacity of 145 rack units and offers N+1 reliability. Impressively, they have a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of under 1.05. Firmus also evaluates them using the more recent total-power usage efficiency (TUE) metric, recording a commendable score of less than 1.15. Notably, these containers occupy merely one-twelfth the space of their air-cooled counterparts.

SMC will grant users access to cutting-edge AI clusters, inclusive of elite workload accelerators and swift networking. Ted Pretty, Chairman of Firmus Technologies, underscored the imperative for eco-friendly cooling solutions in data centres, particularly for AI GPU platforms, and lauded STT GDC for their visionary stance.

Bruno Lopez, President of STT GDC, accentuated the pivotal role of data centres in underpinning AI applications vital for diverse sectors in the forthcoming years. He voiced his belief that their infusion of capital into Firmus' innovative technology will metamorphose their infrastructures into green AI production centers.
