As the spotlight circles around Spotsylvania County for data center development, the Board of Supervisors is discussing how the county could be affected and how to plan accordingly. So far, one proposal in the region, filed by SpotsyTechnoCampus LLC, could bring forth a new facility in Spotsylvania.
Currently, the details are that the development would be a 2.6-million-square-foot “corporate technology campus.” Supervisors are set to vote on the proposal this month, after it was delayed due to data centers being a possibility in the development.
Considering the enormous amount of energy and water consumed by data centers, county staff is reportedly exploring the possibility of introducing permits for data center operators, which would require them to report on their usage. Alternatively, businesses that are large water users could be compelled to use county wastewater plants for cooling.
