Scala Data Centers developed its first facility in Chile and commenced operations at its 5MW Curauma data center. This is Scala's third data center to be launched this year, following the opening of additional sites in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The new facility is already completely leased to an unnamed hyperscaler and is the company's third data center to be fully leased.
The SSCLCR01 facility represents an investment of $65 million and ten months of construction work. In the coming years, the data center can potentially increase its IT capacity to 30MW from its current 5MW. SSCLCR01 is situated in Curauma, a region that will soon receive the Humboldt subsea cable linking Latin America to the Asia Pacific, 56 miles from Santiago, the capital city of Chile.
The company reported that the data center runs on entirely clean energy and has a PUE between 1.2 and 1.3 and a WUE of zero, opting for air-cooling instead. In addition to the Cuarama Campus, Scala is still planning its Lampa Campus in Santiago, which is projected to have a capacity of 80MW and will deliver 30MW in 2024. The company also intends to construct a HyperEdge data center near Santiago.
Scala is investing approximately $400 million in Chile for the first phase of these three data center campuses. The company anticipates that its combined capacity will ultimately exceed 200MW.
