Proteus’s underwater lab and accompanying data center have been given the green light. This follows the signing of a deal with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which saw the two agree a 2026 deployment and to conduct research together.

The lab would span 2,000 sq ft (185 sqm) and will feature a data center; however, further details about the on-site data center have not yet been made public. Also featured in the lab will be a private aquanaut suite, an underwater studio, and wet and dry labs.

According to the company, operations will be powered by a range of renewable energy technologies, including wind, solar, and ocean thermal energy conversion technology.

Fabien Cousteau, chief oceanic explorer of the Proteus Ocean Group and grandson of Jacques Cousteau, said: “The discoveries we can make — in relation to climate refugia, super corals, life-saving drugs, microenvironmental data tied to climate events, and many others — will be truly groundbreaking.”

The lab will be 60 feet under in the ocean by the Caribbean island Curacao and is set to house up to 12 scientists and innovators.
