In Kota Samarahan on the island of Borneo, a new data center is the planning stage. Set to offer 200 MW, the facility will be built by FutureData Sdn Bhd, a new company formed by Cyclect Group and TSG Group.
The data center will be the first major facility on the island; it's pegged to be carbon-neutral, and will employ energy-efficient technology. Timelines for development and further specifications have not yet been shared.
Speaking about this, Melvin Tan, managing director of Cyclect Group, said: "The data reveals that Sarawak possesses a unique combination of attributes that make it an exceptional location for data center development." Tan highlighted the "abundance" of renewable power sources in Sarawak, including hydroelectric power, which can provide a sustainable energy supply for operations.
Dato Chris Chung, group CEO of TSG Group, added: "TSG seeks to do our part to meet our Premier's vision towards a digital and sustainable economy. This data center will be developed in a new integrated green district called FutureGreen District, where healthcare, education, and high-end residential areas will cater to overseas individuals seeking a second home in Kuching."
At the launching of the ceremony, Chung said: "The time has come for us to further explore the potential for Sarawak by tapping into the positive outlook of the domestic data center industry and the rising demand for cloud services in the region."
