Microsoft intends to build a new data center in the Brazilian state of So Paulo. Microsoft is constructing a new data center in Sumaré, presumably expanding its Azure cloud region in So Paulo. The facility will be adjacent to Santo Antonio Park along the Venancio Calegari Municipal Road in Nova Veneza. The project has already received sanction from Cetesb (Environmental Company of the State of So Paulo), but specifics have been kept confidential.

In 2014, Microsoft introduced a So Paulo Azure cloud region in Campinas, known as Brazil South. In 2021, it evolved to three availability zones. The company revealed its intention to establish a second Brazilian region – Brazil Southeast – in Rio de Janeiro in 2020. The site has been reclassified as a reserved access region and is no longer listed on the company's website.

Microsoft has stated that such secondary locations are optimized for disaster recovery and can support scenarios such as assisting to meet data residency standards or specific risk & compliance demands for geographic isolation.
