The digital arm of the Malaysian energy company Petronas, Petronas Digital, has inked a contract with Microsoft to develop a high-performance computing (HPC) artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure platform. The organization will use the platform to perform AI and machine learning to look into energy transition as well as decarbonization use cases. The HPC AI platform will also be accessible to other businesses in Malaysia's energy sector, such as production agreement contractors.

Microsoft is collaborating with Cegal, a cloud provider for the energy and security industries, on the deployment. The energy provider has a previous connection with Cegal and Microsoft, the latter of which provides cloud, automation, and data life cycle services.

Petronas and Celcom Axiata Berhad have been named as the anchor tenants of Microsoft's first Azure data center, which was opened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2021.
