Despite both tech giants making significant layoffs in recent months, both Microsoft and AWS have announced plans to boost investment and data center portfolios in the Telangana region of India. The former is set to double the number of facilities it is building in the region, while AWS has announced that it is set to increase data center investments by more than Rs16,000 Crore ($1.975bn).

In a social media post by the Telangana Minister for Industries and IT, the government expressed its enthusiasm for Microsoft's expansion: "Great News for Telangana! Microsoft announces three more Data Centres (DCs) in Hyderabad. The six DCs (three announced in 2022) enable Microsoft to serve Azure's customers in India & worldwide."

According to reports, Microsoft shared this with Minister K. T. Rama Rao at the Davos World Economic Forum summit. In a statement, he said: "Microsoft & Hyderabad have had a very long and mutually beneficial relationship. I am very happy to learn that Microsoft will expand in Telangana with such huge digital infrastructure projects. I look forward to seeing Microsoft continue to grow in the State."

Meanwhile, Amazon is also investing significantly in the region, which it announced at the recent AWS Empower India event.

In a statement, the government agency tweeted: "We welcome AWS' commitment to invest ₹36,300 Cr (increased from previously announced ₹20,096 Cr) to set up AWS state-of-the-art data centers in Hyderabad. This will strengthen Telangana's position as a progressive data center hub in India."
