May 24, 2023 | Posted by MadalineDunn

A report by Knight Frank has revealed that Mumbai is now the third-largest data center market in the Asia-Pacific region. Mumbai follows Shanghai, Tokyo, which secured first and second place, with 2,692MW, and 2,575 MW, respectively. In third place, Mumbai now offers a total capacity of 2,337 MW.

According to the report, over 328MW of data center capacity was added in Mumbai in the first quarter of 2023, a result of "exponential growth" in internet usage, meaning that its total capacity expansion surpassed the 2,000 MW milestone.

Commenting on the data, Shishir Baijal, chairman and managing director at Knight Frank India, said: "The data centre sector has witnessed a remarkable acceleration in recent years, driven by the exponential growth of internet usage across commerce, social media, entertainment, and cloud adoption."

Adding: "As data centres gain prominence as an asset class in the country, investors are leveraging various strategies such as mergers and acquisitions (M&As), joint ventures, and land acquisitions to tap into this thriving sector."

There are 90 data centers in Mumbai.
