The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has launched a new containerized data center in Hulhumale, the Maldives, which is to be operated under its SmartCom brand. Although specific details about the container are yet to be shared, it reportedly features a redundant battery backup system which can last for a minimum of 24 hours; it also has an 80 kW backup generator. According to HDC managing director Ahmed Atif, the data center will expand the services of the Open Access Network in Hulhumale.

Speaking about the launch, in a statement, the company said: "We are excited to share the successful completion of two major FTTX projects in the Maldives with Housing Development Corporation and Smart Com."

Further, Atif outlined that this addition is part of the company's effort to diversify the telecom infrastructure: "Because of this [data center], small to medium enterprises will receive geo-redundancy services at competitive rates," he said.
