Green Mountain and KMW have formed a 50:50 joint venture to develop a new campus outside of Frankfurt, Germany. The campus has received approval from local authorities, and it is expected that construction will begin on the 25,000 sqm (269,100 sq ft) site, FRA1-Main, in the third quarter of 2023. The two companies have outlined that there will be a focus on sustainability within the development, with the site utilizing river cooling from the Rhine River, with a PUE target of 1.3.
Further, employing the circular economy principles that Green Mountain is known for, it will also provide up to 60MW of waste heat to the Mainz district heating system. Some of the company's other circular economy projects include its Data Center Heat Reuse project with Norwegian Lobster Farm to create a land-based lobster farming with heat reuse, and its partnership with Hima Seafood.
Speaking about the move, Svein Atle Hagaseth, CEO of Green Mountain, said that for the company, while this is part of its pan-European growth strategy, it's "not just about growth," but also about "creating sustainable opportunities," and that the JV with KMW helps to facilitate this. We are excited we can finally offer a green data center located in one of the hottest data center markets in Europe," Hagaseth said.
Adding to this, Oliver Malerius, CEO of KMW, said: "It was important to find a partner with sufficient experience in operating data centers as well as sales and marketing. Green Mountain complements us perfectly."
Meanwhile, Stephan Krome, CFO of KMW, added: "We are convinced that Green Mountain not only has the necessary know-how but also shares the values of KMW and its shareholders."
