The Municipality of Venice this week announced the launch of the new Vega data center in the Italian city. Regional councilor for digital agenda, Francesco Calzavara, and city councilor for economic development, Simone Venturini, attended the opening ceremony.
The €4.5 million ($5.2m) project was largely funded by the European Union and will operate in conjunction with the other regional data center already in operation in Padua. The facility is divided into five separate areas, three of which are reserved for other public entities in the Veneto region. In addition to the Municipality of Venice, Azienda Zero, and the Province of Verona will also utilize the facility.
"This is a truly important investment," Venturini said, "because it's designed not only to meet the needs of the regional administration, but also to support the work of other local entities and organizations. Among these is the Municipality of Venice: this will ensure not only greater security in data and information management, but also significant cost savings."
