Equinix has announced its plan to venture into the South African data center market with a data center development. The company plans to invest $160m to develop a data center campus in Johannesburg. The 4MW data center called JN1 will have over 20,000 gross square feet of colocation space and a capacity for over 690 cabinets. The facility's first phase is scheduled to come online in Mid-2024. Equinix also plans two more phases of development at the site. Upon full build-out, the data center campus will have a capacity of 20MW and over 3,450 cabinets. It will also have over 100,000 gross square feet of data center space.

The President of EMEA, Equinix, Eugene Bergen, said: "We entered the African continent earlier this year with the acquisition of MainOne, the leading West African data center and connectivity solutions provider with presence in Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire. This investment will allow both South African businesses to expand internationally and global businesses to expand into South Africa. Both will be able to accelerate their growth by rapidly scaling their infrastructure, easily adopting hybrid multi-cloud architectures, and interconnecting with business partners through the Platform Equinix ecosystem of more than 10,000 customers."
