Equinix: Equinix strives to balance expansion with its eco targets

Back in June, Equinix committed to becoming climate-neutral by 2030; however, alongside this pledge, in recent years, it has undergone significant growth. Moreover, its environmental metrics reveal that between 2018-19, the company’s scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, carbon intensity, and energy consumption increased.

While the company is expanding its global footprint, its legacy infrastructure also fails to adhere to sustainable regulations, another factor holding it back from its 2030 target.

According to Equinix’s Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) sustainability lead Maurice Mortell, addressing these issues is a priority, but implementing change may take up to a decade.

The second phase of its carbon-neutral mission will be to tackle scope 3 emissions from its supply chain.

Speaking to SDxCentral, Mortell recognised the challenges to come but remains optimistic about the company’s targets. He stated: “We’ve identified what we need to do in each of those sites. It’s just getting after the work and getting it done.”
