Elea Digital, a Brazilian data center corporation, has invested more than $20 million in expanding its Rio de Janeiro data center. The data center in issue, RJ01, has doubled its capacity from 2.5MW to 5MW, and the additional 5,380 sq ft of data center space can accommodate up to 200 more racks. Additionally, the facility is linked to the IX.br Internet exchange and offers a PUE of 1.4.
Elea Digital, which Piemonte Holding acquired in 2019, first announced expansion intentions in March of this year. As per Piemonte CEO Alessandro Lombardi, RJ01 is expected to attain a 7MW capacity. Globo, a Brazilian broadcasting and media corporation, sold the data center in the summer of 2021. As part of the contract for acquisition, Elea continues to provide the company with computing and data services, as well as connectivity to more than 50 providers from a single colocation facility.
Seven data centers are currently in use by Elea throughout Brazil: Curitiba (CTA1), Sao Paulo (SP01), a pair in Brasilia (BSB1 and BSB2), Rio de Janeiro (RJ01), and Porto Alegre (POA1 and POA2), one of which was acquired from TIM in October 2022. Elea acquired CTA1, POA1, SP01, BSB1, and BSB2 from Oi in March 2021 for $70 million as part of Oi's bankruptcy restructuring.
