DataPlex Group: Eirgrid energy decision domino effect: Dataplex enters voluntary liquidation

As covered by DCD, Dataplex has gone into voluntary liquidation, which it said is due to the company having to wait 12 months for grid power approval from Eirgrid, only to be declined. The company had planned to develop brownfield projects, which would have seen the retrofitting of existing structures, and some other larger greenfield projects. It also had plans for a parcel of land in Abbotstown, and Dublin.

As per the Insolvency documents on the Irish Companies Registration Office site, it is outlined that it is "the opinion of the directors that the company will be able to pay its debts in full within the period specified in the statuatory declaration solvency are not unreasonable."

In a statement to DCD, Co-founder and CEO Eddie Kilbane said: "Unfortunately Dataplex Group has entered into voluntary liquidation, due to being refused power contracts from Eirgrid, the National Grid provider, for two projects in Dublin." According to Kilbane, the time spent waiting has been "too much for the investors," and the company had to spend "a lot of money," to get to its current position, only "to be refused." Figures released for March revealed that its total assets are worth just €12,727 ($12,966).

According to energy experts, Ireland is the "worst-prepared country in Europe" for an energy crisis. As a result, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities is now looking at ways to force data center operators to use their own power supply instead of relying on the national grid.
