SBA Edge: Edge data center launched by SBA Communications at Arlington tower site

SBA Communications, a tower company, has launched a new Edge data center in the Dallas-Fort Worth region of Texas. The precise location and configuration of the data center were not disclosed. SBA CEO Jeff Stoops has previously stated that the majority of the company's Edge rollout will consist of 6x12 or 10x20-foot structures resembling traditional wireless shelters with two or three expandable racks.

In November 2022, Stoops reported that the company had "30 to 40" Edge sites in operation or development. According to the company's most recent earnings call in May 2023, this number had increased to "somewhere between 40 and 50" sites. SBA, established in 1989 and headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida, is the proprietor and operator of wireless communications facilities in sixteen markets across the Americas, Africa, and the Philippines. The corporation operates approximately 17,000 towers in the United States.

Prior to its acquisition by Equinix, the company began investigating Edge computing modules at tower sites in partnership with Packet in 2018.
