ECU students protest potential data center facility in the Greenville area

Jan 21, 2022 | Posted by MadalineDunn

Students and staff at East Carolina University have voiced significant concerns around the potential arrival of a crypto mining facility in the Greenville area. This week, those opposing the proposed data center, came together to protest, with the slogan "Say No To Crypto."

A number of protesters pointed to the detrimental environmental impact crypto mining can have, considering its huge consumption of energy (around 91 terawatt-hours of electricity annually).

One particular protestor, sophomore Owen Bergquist said when factoring this in, the economic impact the facility would have on the local area would not be enough to justify construction.
