China Telecom: China Telecom leaving the US in January after appeal fails

News emerging is that China Telecom Americas will be leaving the United States. This comes after the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit denied China Telecom’s emergency motion to pause an FCC order that revoked its authorizations to continue operations in the country. By so doing, China Telecom will cease operations in the US by January 2022.

According to the court documents, the petitioner did not satisfy the strict requirements for a stay pending court review. The company still hopes to challenge the order in court. However, the process could take months. China Telecom says the decision will force it to stop major operations while also harming its reputation, business, and relationships irreparably.

When revoking China Telecom’s license, the FCC claimed the company is subject to influence, exploitation, and control by the Chinese government. The FCC also noted that China Telecom is very likely to be compelled with Chinese government requests.
