Bitcoin Miner GDA opens of three new data centers in South Carolina

Aug 01, 2023 | Posted by MadalineDunn

Genesis Digital Assets (GDA) has announced the opening of three new data centers in South Carolina's Western region. The company is one of the world's largest Bitcoin mining companies, and has 400 MW of capability spread across three continents.  It reportedly accounts for about 2% of the Bitcoin network's total hash rate.

The new facilities came online in February and March, with the first opening in Anderson, and the other two opening between Union and Lockhard. The former has a capacity of 18 MW, while the latter two have a combined capacity of 15 MW.

According to the company, the facilities will run on ‘clean energy,’ and this was reportedly one of the draws to South Carolina, its “abundance of clean electricity.” CEO and Founder Andrey Kim called it one of the most “pro-innovation” states.

“I am extremely proud of the entire GDA team for opening these new facilities in only a few months,” commented Ankit Joshi, GDA's Head of North American operations. “We were impressed to see how these local communities welcomed us so warmly as an opportunity for their economy.”

Meanwhile, Kim said: "The opening of these new data centers is perfectly in line with our commitment to expand our fleet on clean energy resources. Our goal is to be industry leaders and show the world that Bitcoin mining can be very ESG-friendly.”

There are 45 data centers in South Carolina.
