Batelco, Beyon Group's telecoms unit, has announced that one of its facilities is now Bahrain's first 100 percent green-energy-powered data center.

This news follows the completion of Phase 2 of the Solar Park at the Beyon Data Oasis at Hamala. The facility in Bahrain is now entirely powered by energy from the park, which will generate around 3.6 GWh annually, with a carbon footprint saving of over 2000 tonnes. At full build-out, when the third and final phase of the project is complete, the solar panels will produce a total of 6GWh per year.

Another data center will reportedly be built on a 140,000 sqm (1.5 million sq ft) site, but further details on this are yet to be shared.

Shaikh Abdulla, chairman of Beyon, said: "Our efforts towards sustainability and clean energy production continue, and we have made great progress since the launch of the first phase of the solar park in November 2021. Today we are glad to announce the completion of the second phase of the project."

Shaikh Abdulla said that the company's environmental sustainability journey continues in line with its commitment to Bahrain's vision launched by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, which was announced as part of his address during the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021, to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
