Amazon Web Services plans to invest $3.5 billion in New Albany by 2020 to expand its footprint around Columbus, Ohio. The New Albany City Council announced it had approved a resolution enabling AWS to proceed with its expansion investment plan. This is only part of Amazon's $7.5 billion investment goals in Ohio.
Columbus Dispatch reports that only about $1.8 billion will be used for construction slated to begin in 2025, while the other half of the funds will go towards IT equipment. Five data centers will be developed, totaling 1.25 million square feet on 85 acres of the land Amazon bought along Beech and Miller roads.
New Albany Mayor Sloan Spalding said the city is dedicated to fostering economic growth and creating a business-friendly environment to benefit its citizens and the broader community. Today's announcement is a testament to this vision and a tribute to the hard work of our economic development team and community partners."
Roger Wehner, director of economic development, AWS added, "Our newest investment in New Albany builds on our rich partnership with the community and the state, and our ongoing investment will help continue to foster innovation, advance the next generation of local technology leaders, and expand on the tremendous partnerships we have across the Buckeye State."
