Amazon has announced that it has signed another PPA with Iberdrola, through which it will be provided with wind and solar energy from its offshore wind farms in Germany for 1.1 terawatt-hours (TWh) annually.

The wind farms, Baltic Eagle and Windanker, will have a total capacity of 476MW and 300MW, respectively. The former is expected to be completed in 2024, and the latter in 2026.

Further to Iberdrola supplying wind and solar energy to the giant, it announced that it will also be collaborating on various sustainability-focused projects. Included within this bracket is its ‘Advanced Smart Assistant application’ which connects and manages devices such as electric vehicle (EV) chargers and solar panels. Likewise, the energy company has also chosen AWS as its “preferred cloud” provider.

“The challenge of electrifying our energy system to increase our autonomy and reduce emissions requires partnerships between leaders like Iberdrola and Amazon,” said Aitor Moso, director of Iberdrola’s retail business. Further, Moso said the agreement, combining sun, wind, and cloud, will enable new renewable generation capacity around the world and "accelerate the digital revolution in the energy sector.”

Matt Garman, SVP of sales, marketing, and global services at AWS, commented: “Iberdrola and AWS believe that innovation is key to achieving our sustainability goals and accelerating the world’s energy transition. AWS provides the reliability, scale, and cost-efficient IT infrastructure that will allow Iberdrola to optimize renewable energy production, modernize the power grid to integrate renewable energy sources, and enhance visibility across its operations.”
