Amazon has announced that it has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with energy company Renantis for wind energy in Finland from its two Renantis' onshore wind farms when they're complete.

The Mustalamminmäki and Koiramäki wind farms in Karstula, Central Finland, will have a combined capacity of 59MW and are pegged to produce 174GWh of electricity annually, enough to power 20,000 households. Both plants are set to feature five Nordex N163 turbines with a total of 29.5MW generating capacity.

Toni Volpe, CEO of Renantis, shared that it was proud to contribute to Amazon's sustainability goals by powering its business with renewable energy. Volpe said it is a "great example" of businesses and power producers collaborating to meet both business and sustainability objectives.

"We strongly believe in the importance of long-term contracts both for the energy producer and the energy buyer, taking steps towards a cleaner planet," Volpe added.

Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy at Amazon, commented: "The Mustalamminmäki and Koiramäki wind farms will soon be contributing to Amazon's commitments to address the impacts of climate change and our commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2040."

McQuade said that PPAs are an effective means of enabling investment to decarbonize electricity grids. "We're on track to power our operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of our original 2030 target," McQuade added.
