AWS has announced that it has signed a PPA with Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) to procure solar power for its operations in Indonesia. The state-owned electric utility will buy electricity from 210 MW of solar projects (four solar projects located in Bali and Java Island.)

PLN stated that the projects will back Indonesia's goal for a 23% renewables share by 2025. This is similar to the renewable energy goals of AWS, which is pushing to power all of its operations with renewables by the same year, reaching net-zero carbon by 2040.

"PLN is fully committed to supporting the government's program to implement clean energy and accelerating it with a clear roadmap to achieve this mission. This collaboration between the private and public sectors is a key strategy to ensure a clean and affordable energy future," said Darmawan Prasodjo, main director of PT PLN (Persero).

Carly Wishart, director of planning, shipping & execution data center for Asia-Pacific, Japan & China at Amazon, added: "We are pleased to announce our first EBT project in Indonesia in collaboration with PLN, putting Amazon on the path to 100 percent renewable energy. PLN and the Amazon team have worked together to open new ways for companies to obtain EBT domestically.

Further to this, Wishart said: "The EBT project will supply energy for Amazon's Indonesian operations and help advance Amazon's goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions across its businesses by 2040. We look forward to continuing collaboration with PLN to enable more renewable energy projects in Indonesia."
