Oct 11, 2022 | Posted by MadalineDunn

GTA, a telecommunications company in Guam, recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to signify the commencement of construction of its Alupang Data Center, under US-based Huntsman Family Investments (HFI) ownership. The facility and cable landing station will be built in Tamuning, Guam, and will offer 31,000 sqft of floor space with 4MW of power capacity.

Built to Tier III standards, the data center, according to GTA, has energy sustainability and efficiency “built into the data center design,” and will also be able to withstand typhoons, earthquakes and other natural disasters.

Speaking about the addition of the new facility, Paul Huntsman, President and CEO of HFI and GTA Board Chairman, said: “Our ongoing investments demonstrate Guam’s strategic importance as a global and sophisticated communications hub of the Pacific. We are committed to providing vast technological opportunities, enhancing our competitive edge, strengthening the island’s infrastructure, and accelerating ongoing digital transformations in our community.”

Meanwhile, Roland Certeza, President and CEO, commented, “GTA already successfully operates several cable landing stations and data centers in Piti, and the development the Alupang Data Center is part of our ongoing commitment to Guam, further supporting the growth of the local digital economy and digital transformation strategies. It is an exciting project, bringing the first edge computing-led data center to the area, and also providing a connectivity hub for all the new transpacific cables coming to Guam.”

The data center is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2024.
