OFC 2020

Technical Conference: 8 – 12 March 2020
Exhibition: 10 – 12 March 2020

OFC is the largest global conference and exhibition for optical communications and networking professionals. The program is comprehensive -- from research to marketplace, from components to systems and networks and from technical sessions to the exhibition. For over 40 years, OFC has drawn attendees from all corners of the globe to meet and greet, teach and learn, make connections and move the industry forward.

OFC 2020 COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Action Plan

Dated: 8 March 2020
More than 8,000 registrants and nearly 500 exhibitors and sponsors are ready to experience The Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition (OFC 2020) which is scheduled to take place, as planned, 8 – 12 March, in San Diego, California U.S.A. OFC has taken innovative steps to allow for remote 2-way participation via video-conferencing for all technical registrants. The available technical sessions including the workshops, panels, rump session and Postdeadline Papers are now available for remote participants. The plenary and the special keynote by David Welch, founder and chief innovation officer of Infinera for the 50th anniversary of the commercialization of low-loss fiber on Tuesday, 10 March will be livestreamed. Instructions on how to access these sessions will be sent to technical registrants throughout the week.

"We are a global community who will continue to interact, in spite of difficult global situations," said the OFC Steering Committee and Program and General Chairs. "We now find ourselves in unchartered territory but are working together, aiming to put on a conference that utilizes the global telecommunication infrastructure that the OFC community has enabled to allow for virtual technical participation by the international community that has been impacted by the Coronavirus (COVID-19). The work and discovery that has made OFC the most important event in our field will continue as planned."

We respect the decision of those exhibitors and registrants who decided to cancel their participation due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19). We understand that many attendees from China, Iran, Italy, Japan and South Korea, and speakers who are prohibited from traveling due to their institutional/ corporate policies, will be unable to participate in-person.

“We will continue to support the thousands of registrants and hundreds of companies still committed to attending the conference and exhibition in-person, and we thank them for their continued engagement", said Ryan Strowger, head of OFC Management. “OFC is offering all presenters the option to pre-record their presentations or submit their poster PDF for presentation in advance of the conference. Selected sessions will also have live speaker participation via video-conferencing. With these news steps in place, hundreds of speakers can still deliver their groundbreaking content, whether in-person or via recording."

For the benefit of all technical registrants, the OFC Program Chairs will have all of the speaker-authorized content from the technical sessions recorded. These recorded talks (content capture) will be made available within 24 hours.

A “no-handshake policy” at OFC is among the measures being implemented to protect the health of attendees. Additional onsite tools for registrants, exhibitors and onsite personnel include the following:

  • Increased availability Hand Sanitizer Stations
  • Increased Facility-Wide Cleaning and Disinfecting
  • Sanitizing/Cleaning Materials Available for Exhibitors
  • Increased On-Site Medical Support
  • Reduced Transfer of Physical Materials at Registration
  • Modified Catering/Food Service Practices for optimal food safety
  • Individual Hand Sanitizer available at Registration
  • Continuous Air Handling in Facility
OFC Management will:

  • Follow recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the policies of the local government and city officials
  • Ensure that First Aid personnel are adequately trained and capable of assessing and assisting those that may demonstrate flu-like symptoms
  • Identify local emergency care facilities that will be able to promptly care for attendees that may require immediate treatment
We strongly urge exhibitors and attendees to implement appropriate guidelines and protocols as suggested by the WHO and other health authorities.

The U.S. Government has taken steps to mitigate the concerns regarding COVID-19. Please reference links below for more information.

OCP Global Summit (Cancelled)

3-2-20 UPDATE

We realize that the cancellation of the 2020 OCP Global Summit has created a series of issues that need to be handled immediately.   As you can imagine, there are a lot of moving parts. Please know that we are working diligently to resolve these issues as quickly as is feasible. Since our plan requires approval from our Board of Directors, we plan to provide final direction by early next week.

  • Regarding registration refund requests, we are determining what the refund policy will be within the next week.
  • Regarding your hotel reservations, those are relationships that exist between you and the hotel you booked. However, we have already met with the hotels to try to find ways to limit your exposure in a way that is fair for both parties.
  • Regarding Engineering Workshop Sessions, Keynote Sessions, Executive Tracks and Expo Hall talks, we are exploring alternative ways that we can repurpose this content into a virtual format, or rescheduling these sessions. We’ll have a formal plan by March 10th
  • For Exhibitors and Sponsors, we are looking for ways that your investment can be redeployed into future efforts, potentially creating even greater value than the physical event itself.
We truly care about the OCP Community and our intent is to mitigate the negative aspects of the cancellation of our Flagship event, while capitalizing on the tremendous momentum and all the amazing content that has been created. Please understand we will provide you with answers as soon as possible, and expect plan approval by next week.

2-28-20 UPDATE REGARDING THE CORONAVIRUS - CANCELLATION OF 2020 OCP GLOBAL SUMMIT

Due to the fact that the World Health Organization (WHO) today increased the assessment of the risk of spread and impact of COVID-19 to very high at the global level, and additional cases reported in key regions including Santa Clara County (California), the Open Compute Project Foundation (OCP) has decided to cancel the OCP Global Summit next week.

Therefore, all events are cancelled at this time, including the Future Technology Symposium and the Open System Firmware Hack event.

A lot of work has been done in preparation for this event, including important product rollouts, company announcements, and innovations from our member companies. We would like to work with you on following through with those announcements to the Community, and the industry at large, over the next week.

We will also be creating a plan to convert all the amazing content whereby our sponsors and exhibitors can still share their capabilities and innovations with key constituencies in order to further the innovations among our Community. More details to come, but we will try to create this event to take place as soon as possible.

Furthermore, we will still determine the winner of the Future Technologies Symposium next week, make that announcement, share all the amazing posters and innovations submitted, and award the $10,000 prize.

Over the next few days, we will be determining the exact impact and communicating to you our decisions on the terms of the cancellation for both attendees and sponsors.

A reliable source of updates on the Coronavirus can be found here as you determine the best ways to keep yourself, your families, and your colleagues safe during this time: https://www.who.int/.

The OCP Team will be in the Bay area next week, so please reach out to us if you would like to get together.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Ethiopia Internet Development Conference 2020

Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa with more than 105 million citizens. However, it has relatively low Internet connectivity with less than 15% of its population having access to the Internet.

Even those having access to the Internet pay, access is expensive and often unreliable. As a result, Ethiopians risk from being marginalized from the Internet economy. Fortunately, this is changing since the state monopoly on telecommunication that was the root cause of most of the problems has been abolished and competition is in the horizon.

The Internet Society, together with its partners, organizes Ethiopia Internet Development Conference 2020 as a multi-stakeholder event to so that the local community can prepare for this new era and start developing the Internet ecosystem for the benefit of citizens and businesses alike. The event will take place from 3-5 March 2020 in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa.

We are grateful and honored that the Ministry of Innovation and Technology has accepted to support the conference.

Objective of the Conference
The objective of the conference is to create awareness amongst policy makers, regulators, businesses, technologists, and potential entrepreneurs about the Internet model, technology and organizations and create the foundation for a robust internet Ecosystem in Ethiopia in this new post-monopoly era. Specifically, the conference will:

  • Address the main issues and challenges the country is facing in relation to the quality and penetration of Internet service and technology.
  • Explore different technical options to improve the local internet infrastructure and to make better use of the regional and global internet infrastructure.
  • Explore the potential and future obstacles, threats regarding Internet technology expansion in the country and discuss potential solutions and recommendations.

Expected Outcome
The 2-day conference will be action oriented. It would result in a number of recommendations on how to build the Internet ecosystem.

Who Should Attend
The conference targets policy makers, regulators, businesses, technologists, and potential entrepreneurs. The conference is planned as a non-profit event and international sponsorship and support have been sought to convene the event.
