The eThekwini Municipality in Durban, South Africa, has signed a preliminary Memorandum of Agreement with the Korea South Power Consortium to explore the development of a massive AI data center in Amanzimtoti, south of the city.
The proposed facility could become the largest data center in South Africa, potentially consuming a quarter of Durban's entire electricity supply. Valued at between $3 billion and $10 billion, it would be a public-private partnership, with the municipality providing land and infrastructure while the Korean consortium funds construction and operations. Officials have stressed that all figures remain unconfirmed and the agreement is strictly for feasibility purposes.
