Facebook expanding Papillion Campus

Mar 24, 2021 | Posted by admin

Facebook just announced that it would be expanding its data center campus in Papillion for the second time. Facebook said it would be expanding the data center facility at the intersection of Capehart Road and Nebraska 50 by about 1 million square feet. It also noted that the project would cost approximately $400 million.

However, Facebook didn’t give the construction timeline for this project, but the Papillion data center size will be almost 3.6 million square feet when the expansion is complete.

Facebook's announcement on March 24th 2021:
Today, Facebook is excited to announce that we are officially joining the Springfield community by expanding our data center by nearly 1 million square feet. This expansion will bring an additional $400 million in capital investment to Sarpy County as well as 100 new operational jobs. We will maintain hundreds of construction workers on-site for years to come. This brings our total investment in Nebraska to nearly $1.5 billion and supports more than 300 total data center jobs. At the peak of construction, we will have more than 2,000 construction workers on site. When construction is complete, the data center will be 3.6 million square feet in total.

With today’s expansion announcement, we’ve added 500+ acres of land in Springfield to expand our campus across Capehart Road to the south of the existing data center campus. Now that we are part of both the Papillion and Springfield communities, it’s time to update our name from Facebook’s Papillion Data Center to Sarpy Data Center.

To demonstrate our local and global commitments to Sustainability at Facebook and building community, we are excited to also announce that we are partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation by providing a $100,000 grant in support of tree planting initiatives in Sarpy County in 2021. In total, we are proud to have provided more than $2 million in grants and donations to assist our community since opening in 2019.

Our data center will continue to be supported by 100% renewable energy. This is made possible through our investments in wind energy, including the Rattlesnake Creek Wind Farm in Dixon, NE. Facebook’s entire global operation is on track to reach our goal of reaching net zero emissions and our data centers are leading the way.

We’ve seen firsthand how this community pulls together to support one another. All of us at Facebook are thankful for our partners and community members in Springfield, Papillion, and Sarpy County who have made it possible for us to continue to grow here in Nebraska.
