Facebook has formally announced its data center project in Gallatin Tennesse via a column Sheryl Sandberg wrote in the Tennessean. The social media company will build a 982,000 square foot facility with a total investment of $800 million. The 809-acre campus will be powered with 220MW of renewable energy sourced from nearby solar farms.

Facebook has hired DPR Construction to build out the campus and plans to start construction immediately. The contractor has built several other Facebook data centers, including in Sweden and Fort Worth, Texas. At peak construction, more than 1,100 workers will be on-site daily. If covid-19 does not delay the construction, the facility will become operational in 2023.

Facebook could eventually build as many as six buildings on its property, according to documents filed with Gallatin. The city of Gallatin located 30 miles northeast of downtown Nashville and has approximately 43,000 residents.
