Equinix has announced the opening of its new hyperscale data center facility in São Paulo, Brazil, called SP5x. The new facility is located next to Equinix’s SP3 IBX data center in Santana de Parnaíba. The facility has 5MW of capacity in its first phase. It is also expected to have a total capacity of 14.4MW upon full buildout. Equinix also mentioned that it would be investing up to $116.4 million in the facility.

President of Equinix Brazil, Eduardo Carvalho, said the new facility is designed to meet the different requirements of all its hyperscale customers in a very competitive market. He noted that SP5x is located in a strategic position in its São Paulo campus and connected to the rich business and digital ecosystems within Equinix’s existing IBX data centers. Eduardo finally added that SP5x would provide customers access and proximity to the best business platform globally.

In 2019, Equinix formed a partnership with Singaporean wealth fund, GIC to build hyperscale data centers under the xScale name. The new S5x data center is the first xScale facility in the Americas. Equinix is also planning another hyperscale facility in São Paulo and one in Mexico City.
