Alibaba has announced its sustainability goals to meet the rest of the industry in its push to go green. According to Alibaba's Chairman and CEO, Daniel Zhang, this announcement aligns with the company's aspiration to become a force for "positive, innovative change in society."

Zhang says that through the company's ESG strategy, it will leverage its "unique influence" to mobilize action and behavioral changes not just in its merchants and partners in China but also in its consumers. Its proposed Scope 3+ target of reducing 1.5 gigatons of carbon emissions by 2035 will reportedly facilitate this change.

Overall, the company aims to achieve carbon neutrality across Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and achieve a 50% carbon intensity reduction target for Scope 3 by 2030. According to the company, it will release its first ESG report later this year.

Some of the company's decarbonization efforts include reducing emissions by utilizing energy-saving and efficiency-improving technologies, using renewables, and researching carbon removal initiatives.
